Running a shop means a lot of small moments at the counter: scanning items, taking payment, printing a receipt, and hoping your stock numbers are still right at the end of the day. Odoo Point of Sale (POS) connects all of that to your inventory and accounting, so each sale updates the rest of your business automatically.
Here is a simple, practical setup guide for a small retail business.
Before you start
Odoo POS works best when your Inventory and Accounting basics are already in place. Make sure your chart of accounts is configured and your products exist, because every sale at the register posts to both.
Step 1: Install the Point of Sale app
Go to Apps, search for Point of Sale and install it. This creates your first register, ready to configure.
Step 2: Set up your products
Mark each item you want to sell at the counter as "Available in Point of Sale", then add a price, a category and a barcode. Good categories make the register screen quick to use, and barcodes let staff scan instead of searching.
Step 3: Create your payment methods
Go to Point of Sale, then Configuration, then Payment Methods, and click New. Cash needs no integration. Card payments use a connected payment terminal, and you can also set up QR code payments through a bank account. Choose the journal that will record the transactions and the register where the method should be available.
Step 4: Configure your register
Under Configuration, open Point of Sale and select your register. Add the payment methods you created, choose how receipts behave, and repeat this for every extra register or store location.
Step 5: Connect your hardware
A basic counter setup is a screen, a barcode scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer. Check hardware compatibility before you buy, because it saves a lot of trouble later.
Step 6: Open a session and make a test sale
From the POS dashboard, click New Session. Add a product by clicking it or scanning it, click Payment, pick a method and click Validate. Then check that stock dropped in Inventory and the sale shows in Accounting. Always run a few test sales before your first real customer.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Skipping test sales, then finding payment or tax issues with a real customer waiting.
- Leaving products without categories, which makes the register slow to use.
- Buying hardware before checking it works with your setup.
- Not training cashiers on returns and closing the session at day end.
Why connect POS to the rest of Odoo?
The real benefit is that the register is not a separate island. Stock updates after each sale, reports show what sells best, and customer data can flow into your CRM for follow-up offers. If you also manage store openings, staff rollouts or supplier tasks, Odoo Project Management keeps those organized in the same system.
